Hull Befriending

Our befrienders offer you a compassionate hand during your journey. We know that discovering your child’s disability or facing tough times can be hard because we’ve been there ourselves.

Our free emotional support service can help you through those difficult times.

Who is it for?

Parents and primary carers based in the Hull region.

When does it run?

Befrienders meet or call parents one-to-one at mutually-convenient times.

How much does it cost?

About this service

Hull Befriending is delivered by a team of trained volunteer befrienders. Every befriender is a parent/carer themselves. They’ve been where you are, they understand the challenges you face, and they’re here to offer a listening ear and a caring heart.

When you contact us, we’ll arrange a call to talk about what you need from our service. If you decide to move forward, we’ll match you with a befriender. Your shared experience will form the foundation of your relationship.

Through open and empathetic communication, your befriender will be there for you to offer support, understanding, and a pointer to other helpful resources.

With Kids befrienders you’re not alone. A card given by a mum to one of our befrienders captures the spirit of our service: “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain. Thank you.”

“I did not have the benefit of a befriender but dearly wish I had as I know those dark, difficult early months could have been made bearable. There is a fine line most parents walk when they are faced with a diagnosis of disability for their child between coping and falling into crisis.

It’s for these reasons that I decided to become a befriender. I have gone through the ‘dark times’ and come out the other side. I can empathise with what many parents will be going through.”
