SEND reform
The Government has carried out a 12-week SEND reform consultation on the proposed changes to SEND support for children and young people in England, SEND reform: putting children and young people first.
This page provides information about the proposed SEND reforms and Kids’ formal response to the consultation.
What do the reforms mean?
The consulatation document on SEND reform sets out the Government’s proposals for education reform and SEND support in England. It does not immediately change SEND law and your child’s legal rights to support remain in place.
We’ve created an overview of the Government’s proposed changes to help you understand what these reforms might mean.
Kids’ formal response to SEND reform consultation
We have submitted our formal response to the SEND reform consultation by completing the official consultation questions through the Department for Education (DfE) consultation portal and sending a more detailed written submission directly to the DfE.
Our response reflects the experiences, ideas and feedback shared by families, young people with SEND, staff members, and professionals across the SEND sector.
Young people’s views on SEND reform proposals
We have produced a report bringing together the views, experiences and feedback shared by young people with SEND, gathered in response to the questions set out in the SEND Reform Consultation.
Our vision for SEND reform
We have long called for a SEND system that works for rather than against disabled children and young people.
The Government has an important opportunity to regear the SEND system so that children and young people get the right support, at the right time, at every stage of their lives.
But meaningful reform requires joint accountability and funding for SEND provision, agreed principles of inclusion, SEND training and workforce development, and legal rights to early intervention.
