Young People’s Views on SEND Reform Proposals

We have produced a report bringing together the views, experiences and feedback shared by young people with SEND, gathered in response to the questions set out in the SEND Reform Consultation. This report was sent directly to the Department for Education.

Following a 12-week consultation period on the proposed changes to the SEND system, we produced a report which brings together the views, experiences and priorities of 434 children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) from across England. This report was sent directly to the Department for Education to help shape the SEND reforms.

Developed through surveys, school visits, participation groups and online sessions, the report captures what young people told us in response to the Government’s SEND Reform Consultation. Their feedback highlights what is working well, where support is falling short, and the changes they want to see for the future.

The report explores key themes including:

  • Mental health and wellbeing support
  • Inclusion in schools and colleges
  • Transitions into adulthood, employment and university
  • Individual Support Plans (ISPs)
  • Choosing the right school or setting
  • Access to information, support and specialist services
  • The importance of listening to young people directly

A consistent message runs throughout the report: young people deserve to be listened to, involved in decisions about their lives, and supported in ways that recognise their individual strengths, needs and aspirations.

We would like to thank every young person, family member, school, college and organisation who contributed their time, experiences and ideas to this. Your voices are vital in shaping a more inclusive and effective SEND system.
