Healthy Parent Carers Programme

A supportive online programme empowering parent carers to improve their health and wellbeing, led by trained KIDS facilitators with lived experience.

Supporting parent carers to look after their own health and wellbeing.

Caring for a child with special educational needs or disabilities can be challenging. Many parent carers put their own health and wellbeing last, often feeling they have no time or energy to focus on themselves, and may even see putting themselves first as selfish.

The Healthy Parent Carers Programme offers 10 weekly online sessions to help you make small, achievable changes that fit into everyday life.

The programme will help you to:

  • Improve your health and wellbeing through small, achievable steps that fit around family life.
  • Connect with other parent carers in a supportive and understanding environment.
  • Build confidence and find practical ways to cope with everyday challenges.
  • Learn useful strategies to manage day-to-day pressures.

The programme is delivered by trained KIDS facilitators who are parent carers themselves, bringing both professional training and lived experience to create a safe, welcoming non-judgemental space.

Healthy Parent Carers was co-developed with parent carers from the Family Faculty at the Peninsula Childhood Disability Research Unit (PenCRU), University of Exeter Medical School, so it reflects the experiences and priorities of families.

This is your chance to focus on your own wellbeing, with support from people who truly understand what life as a parent carer is like.

It was very real and relatable. Everything was relaxed and you made the environment feel safe to share vulnerable things. It felt like a group of friends coming together. All the material covered was relevant and shared rather than a traditional teaching method if that makes sense. It didn’t feel like teacher-student, it felt like someone walking beside in your parent carer journey and guiding you.
