KIDS is recruiting a Chair to take over from summer 2022. After six years, KIDS' Chair Stephen Unwin will be handing on the baton.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join a committed Board of Trustees, and support an ambitious Executive Leadership Team alongside a dedicated team of staff, to deliver an ambitious new five-year strategy. KIDS' Chair will lead the Board to support growth, impact, innovation and systemic reform ambitions, all in partnership with the disabled children, young people and families that we support.

The ideal candidate will be a seasoned non-executive with understanding of charitable service delivery and experience of operating at a senior level. Lived experience of disability as a disabled person or family member is strongly desirable; a genuine interest, fluency and credibility in this area, and commitment to the vision and values of KIDS, is a must.

About KIDS

KIDS was launched in 1970, when teacher John Mulcahy, working with a disabled child in his class and the child’s mother, discovered what practical support would fill the gaps in provision that the child and family needed. Fifty years on, we continue to learn from disabled children, young people and their families. Society has changed, and we support families to find solutions that work for them.

In our new strategy we set out a vision that is founded on rights and opportunities. Having a disability should not stop anyone from having the chance to be supported to achieve what they can. We work with around 12,000 disabled children, young people and family members each year across England; during 2021 we delivered over 190,000 hours of support. But we plan to reach and engage 120,000 disabled young people and their families, every year, by 2027. We support children of all ages, from babies through to young adults, whatever their disability. We are continually developing our expertise and sharing it with others. We are proud of our achievements but know how far there is to go before every disabled child and young person leads a fulfilled life and families are supported at every stage.
