About this service

Hull Befriending is delivered by a team of trained volunteer befrienders. Every befriender is a parent/carer themselves. They’ve been where you are, they understand the challenges you face, and they’re here to offer a listening ear and a caring heart.

When you contact us, we’ll arrange a call to talk about what you need from our service. If you decide to move forward, we’ll match you with a befriender. Your shared experience will form the foundation of your relationship.

Through open and empathetic communication, your befriender will be there for you to offer support, understanding, and a pointer to other helpful resources.

With Kids befrienders you’re not alone. A card given by a mum to one of our befrienders captures the spirit of our service: “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain. Thank you.”

“I did not have the benefit of a befriender but dearly wish I had as I know those dark, difficult early months could have been made bearable. There is a fine line most parents walk when they are faced with a diagnosis of disability for their child between coping and falling into crisis.

It’s for these reasons that I decided to become a befriender. I have gone through the ‘dark times’ and come out the other side. I can empathise with what many parents will be going through.”
