About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join a committed Board of Trustees and support an ambitious Executive Leadership Team (ELT) to deliver an inspirational new five-year strategy. As a Trustee you will be part of the Board committed to support our growth, impact, innovation and systemic reform ambitions, all in partnership with the disabled children, young people and families that we support.

As a Trustee you will collaborate closely with other Board members and develop a relationship with incoming and existing Trustees in which they balance respectful and constructive dialogue that blends challenge, support and the ability to investigate issues together and to agree clear actions and decisions.

We are looking for Trustees with either lived experience of disability, either directly or through association, or with a genuine interest and fluency in this area.

About KIDS

KIDS was launched in 1970, when teacher John Mulcahy, working with a disabled child in his class and the child’s mother, discovered what practical support would fill the gaps in provision that the child and family needed.

Fifty years on, we continue to learn from disabled children, young people and their families. Society has changed, and we support families to find solutions that work for them.

Despite major reforms, life remains challenging. Our health and care systems force families to emphasise the negative to gain support. Disabled children and young people are constantly reminded what they cannot do, not what they can and do achieve. Families must fight the system, often falling into crisis because early help is not available.

KIDS works with around 12,000 disabled children, young people and family members each year across England; during 2021 we delivered over 190,000 hours of support. We support children of all ages, from babies through to young adults, whatever their disability. We are continually developing our expertise and sharing it with others. We are proud of our achievements but know how far there is to go before every disabled child and young person leads a fulfilled life and families are supported at every stage.

We have just launched a new strategy which will enable us to reach 120,000 disabled young people and their families, every year, by 2027.
