Alexia completes Super Hero Run
16 May 2011
Disabled woman proves she's a true superhero! Alexia raises £10k for charity KIDS in Doitforcharity.com Super Hero Run in Regent’s Park on May 15th
Five kilometres is the furthest 30-year-old Alexia de Gunzburg has ever walked her life. Alexia has a condition called Familial Dysautonomia which affects fewer than 400 people in the world. The severity of her condition means she had to overcome many barriers to complete the Super Hero Run. Alexia’s walking pace is about one quarter of the speed of a non-disabled person and her balance is severely affected. She walks with a mobility aid and has had to have a steel rod inserted down her spine to correct her extreme scoliosis. She was supported through the walk by her coach, who is also her trainer. Alexia also has severely reduced thermal regulation and sense of pain so she needed to stop a few times to refuel and hydrate. Her time without those breaks factored in was 2 hours and 10 minutes.
Alexia had not walked more than 1500 metres before starting her training seven months ago. On completing the race, she said: "I feel on top of the world by achieving this major challenge. I am also happy that my wonderful supporters helped raise over £10,000 pounds for KIDS. I hope it is put to good use."
Of her fundraising challenge, Alexia said, “I turned 30 and felt it was time to show others what I can achieve if I really put my mind (and body) to it. I love both the feeling of accomplishment and the continued support that I am receiving.”
Kevin Williams, Chief Executive of KIDS, said: “Alexia’s commitment to completing this challenge and her determination to succeed and exceed her own boundaries is awe-inspiring. We are also naturally delighted, and grateful, that she has chosen to raise much-needed funds for KIDS.”
