For children and young people's services

Hull Inclusive cyclingIf families with disabled children and young people are going to be in control of their personal budget and deciding which services they want to commission to meet their child’s requirements, children and young people’s services need to be aware of how this will affect them.

Services will need to examine whether they offer a quality service for disabled children, young people and their families and how to extend this; how they market their service directly to families; how flexible their service is to meet the requirements of disabled children and young people; and how they cost services with careful consideration of their existing legal duties.

Recent research has shown that many families appear to be using personal budgets to purchase support from universal services such as play and leisure services rather than from specialist care. Therefore it is important that universal services recognise this and support their service to become more inclusive so they can meet the requirements of more children.
