The Virgin London Marathon has been one of the UK’s great annual events since 1981. In addition to being one of the top five international marathons run over the traditional distance of 42.195 km (26 miles and 385 yards), the London Marathon is also a large, celebratory sporting festival bringing together over 35,000 runners and thousands more spectators. According to the race organisers, the London Marathon is now the largest annual fundraising event in the world.
